It is important to bear in mind also that Liszt was pioneering new piano techniques. In the 1820s and 1830s few people knew and understood Beethoven's works. XV emphasis mine)Ī footnote to the above passage includes: The second motive derived from the first: he wanted to popularize these masterpieces everywhere. (italics original boldface mine)Īs to why Liszt would have included them, the Preface begins:īasically two motives impelled Ferenc Liszt to transcribe for solo piano the symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827): one was the profound respect he felt. Should you set to engraving the manuscript of the two Symphonies I would ask you to recommend to the engraver that they are engraved with plenty of room because of the fingerings I must add and also because of the complexity of the passages. 1Īnd in the Preface to Supplement 11, which contains symphonies 5-7, Liszt himself is quoted from a letter to the transcriptions' publisher: In the pieces, Liszt's original fingering is given everywhere. In particular, this quotation from the "General Preface" to the series: The edition is very strict in adhering to Liszt's original markings. The Neue Liszt-Ausgabe is a scholarly edition intended especially for musicologists studying Liszt's compositional process and style. Here is the passage given in OP "sample 1" from the Neue Liszt-Ausgabe edition (1993) (mvmt 4, mm. Why did Liszt put fingerings in his transcription of Beethoven's Ninth?įirst, it's important to establish whether the fingerings are given by Liszt, which they are. In the interest of keeping this post focused, I'll just address the specific question of. I wonder which of these theories is right, if any, and/or if there's other benefit to adding finger markings to virtuosic piano pieces. Following the specified fingerings does result in a slight difference in pronunciation of each note compared to alternate fingerings that one might choose, and this difference is something Liszt wanted to specify. This piece is so long that it is meant to be sight-read for the most part, and finger markings speed that process up.Liszt just loved being explicit about fingerings, just like he loved adding ossia's.I wonder why you would add extensive fingering notations to a piece that's clearly only for the very best of pianists, who would presumably no longer need them. Which is why it kind of confused me to see fingering markings, not just in a few parts but all over the place. This thing is over an hour long with numerous technical feats and is surely something only an incredibly skilled pianist would even dare to try out. A must have for any music collection.I was watching along with an entertaining video of Liszt's solo piano transcription of Beethoven's 9th symphony. This album won Perlmutter his first Grammy Award Nomination and was designated an American Library Association "Notable Recording." Beethoven's Wig is a timeless classic. "Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!" said Pulse Magazine. At the end of the vocal renditions, each piece is performed without the words by a world-class orchestra, just as it was originally written. And for kids, parents and teachers there are activities to supplement the songs. Other favorites are "Just For Elise," in which Perlmutter rhymes everything with the name of one of Beethoven's many girlfriends, and "Please Don't Play Your Violin at Night," about Mozart's never ceasing desire to write and play music.Īs a bonus (one that's included in every Beethoven's Wig album), there are trivia questions about the pieces and the composers. There's "Beethoven's Wig" - a description the old master's giant hairpiece set to the immortal "5th Symphony." And "Tchaikovsky's Cannonball," the story of the "big bang" the composer made when he brought a cannon to a performance of his "1812 Overture." Also included is the song that audiences dance along to at every Beethoven's Wig concert, the famous "Can You Can Can?" set to the famous Can Can by Offenbach. On this album are some of Perlmutter's finest gems. It features Richard Perlmutter's witty, irreverent and hilarious lyrics set to some of the world greatest masterpieces of classical music.

Users must provision and manage a Redshift cluster to use Redshift Spectrum. On the other hand, Redshift Spectrum is not serverless. Users only pay for the queries they run there is no need to provision or manage any servers. Amazon Athena is serverless, meaning there is no infrastructure to manage. One of the key differences between Amazon Athena and Redshift Spectrum is the infrastructure required to use the tools. Redshift Infrastructure – Amazon Athena vs Redshift Spectrum Supports various data formats such as CSV, JSON, Parquet, and ORCĪmazon Athena vs. Supports AWS IAM and VPC for access controlīest suited for ad-hoc queries and small to medium datasetsīest suited for complex queries and large datasets Integrates well with Redshift and other AWS servicesĪutomatically scales up or down based on the query volume Pay-per-hour pricing model for Redshift cluster and pay-per-query pricing model for Spectrum Slower than Redshift Spectrum due to its serverless natureįaster than Athena due to its MPP architecture Serverless query service for querying data stored in S3 While Amazon Athena and Redshift Spectrum are designed to query data stored in Amazon S3 using standard SQL, the two tools have some key differences. Moreover, Redshift Spectrum can accommodate various file formats like CSV, JSON, Parquet, ORC, and Avro. This implies that users can easily link data saved in S3 and combine it with information saved in Redshift. Redshift Spectrum has the advantage of being integrated with Amazon Redshift. The SQL dialect used by Redshift Spectrum is the same as that used by Amazon Redshift, making it simple for users to begin using the tool. What is Redshift Spectrum?Īmazon Redshift has a Redshift Spectrum feature that lets users query data on Amazon S3 using standard SQL. This allows users to focus on their analysis without worrying about infrastructure. Also, Athena is serverless, so there is no infrastructure to manage. Users don’t need to learn a new query language. Additionally, Athena supports several file formats, such as CSV, JSON, Parquet, ORC, and Avro.Īthena is easy to use because it uses standard SQL. You only pay for the queries that you run. It is a serverless service, so you don’t need to worry about managing any infrastructure. What is Amazon Athena?Īmazon Athena is a service that allows you to quickly analyze data stored in Amazon S3 by running SQL queries. This blog post will shed more light on the differences between these two tools and identify the specific circumstances where one tool could be more advantageous. These tools are part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and aim to aid users in querying data kept on Amazon S3. Among the popular tools within this domain are Amazon Athena and Redshift Spectrum. The field of big data offers various tools that help process and analyze vast amounts of data. I do like the look of the final result, although it wasn't without challenges… The back of the motif can be rather messy if you're working with several colours – it's an awful lot of yarn ends to have to weave into a small space when you think that you not only have to weave in the start of each piece of thread to anchor it, as well as the end. Here's my little sweater with its foxy motif: You can also create your own charts of course, there's a useful piece about that on 'Knitty'. I actually bought a little collection of charts for my motif, but you could easily use any other kind of free chart available on the internet, and I reckon cross stitch charts would be great for this too. The way it seems to be most commonly done though is to create a motif from a chart. It does seem to be a technique that lends itself to making it up as you go along too, as with this very simple but effective design on a child's cardigan: Or perhaps an all over pattern? This is actually called 'thrummed knitting' where you create the 'duplicate' stitch with wool roving, which makes for a very messy looking, but supremely warm wrong side (check out this free pattern):ĭuplicate stitch also looks great when used as an integral part of the design – especially if you choose a colour that really stands out from the background, as the Purl Bee have with this Friendly Fair Isle sweater (pattern link here): You can use it to make a simple decorative edging (there's a step by step at the source for this picture): Whilst I love the simple clean look of the mini boat neck sweater, it was just crying out for a little fun to be injected, so I thought it was a good time to learn Swiss darning or 'duplicate stitch', which involves stitching on the knit side of stockinette stitch (there's a piece over on Mollie Makes that explains all).įrom what I've gathered so far, duplicate stitch can be used in lots of different ways in knitting. Sometimes though, things are just too plain – like the little silver coloured baby jumper I made recently: I do knit and crochet with sparkly yarn too, but I wouldn't normally dream of embroidering a piece of knitwear. As a maker / designer, I'm not really big on embellishment unless we're talking Christmas, which I love to cover with sequins, beads and glitter at every opportunity. The refractor design is actually the oldest of the three main optical designs but, this doesn’t mean that they aren’t great. Why A Refractor Telescope?Īnd last but not least it’s the refractor telescope design. They also have a loss of detail too because the light is bent inside the telescope, generally to accommodate a more compact design. Refractors are the eaiser of the two to look after as the optics aren’t exposed like a reflectors, instead it’s hidden within its uniform body.Ī compound scope also fixes all the issues of a reflector and even for the most part, the issues that refractor base scopes have however, they also tend to cost a lot more to manufacture which means the prices for compound scopes will generally start off at a higher price than both a refractor or reflector telescope. However, the pros come with the cons so even though the aperture per dollar is technically better for reflectors, is it really worth the extra maintenance that would be required on top? The core benefits of a reflector is that they’re the cheapest of the three to manufacture meaning you’ll have the ability to buy a telescope with more horsepower at a lower price.Īnd they also don’t have issues with chromatic and spherical aberration that refractor’s tend to suffer from. These three types include a Reflector, A Compound and of course Refractor telescopes. There are 3 different types of telescopes and they all have their benefits and weaknesses. =>Click Here To Check The Sky-Watcher Evoguide 72’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron Inspire 80AZ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The ED127’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Orion 9024 AstroView 90mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check Celestron The AstroMaster 90EQ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Meade Instruments Infinity 102AZ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Gskyer Telescope, 600x90mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Orion Observer 80ST 80mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Meade Series 6000 115mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron 21036 PowerSeeker 70AZ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Sky-Watcher Evoguide 72’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron Inspire 80AZ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The ED127’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Orion 9024 AstroView 90mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check Celestron The AstroMaster 90EQ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Meade Instruments Infinity 102AZ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Gskyer Telescope, 600x90mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Orion Observer 80ST 80mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Meade Series 6000 115mm’s Best Prices OnlineClick Here To Check The Celestron 21036 PowerSeeker 70AZ’s Best Prices Online Visit us from anywhere and well help you get behind the wheel of. OK, so just to update this thread (because I know you're all on the edge of your seats) and offer a solution to anyone else in the unlikely event they are trying to put such an old OSX on an even older Macbook Pro. DVD writer, I think I'm still stuck?!Do you have a DVD writer anywhere? I can see if I can make an ISO of the installer for you to burn? DVD writer, I think I'm still stuck?!ĮDIT: Just seen the DVD option. and also the fact that it seems Apple didn't reach the 21st Century until after this Macbook 'Pro' was produced and there is no USB boot on this model (apparently).ĮDIT: Just seen the DVD option. because this is the only Mac in the building, so I'm guessing the other steps are a moot point. What is more unfortunate is that I'm falling at the first hurdle. Unfortunately there were obviously some steps I missed as (unlike your thorough explanation) I guess the internet guides assume that one is familiar with the Mac OS. Sad to say I've got so used to downloading an ISO and whacking it on any old computer, this just baffles me. Windows can be cryptic at times but with MacOS, I really have no clue why it isn't letting me do what I want (especially as it is randomly refusing to format a disk or unmount it etc). Many thanks for taking the time to detail all this for me, I do appreciate it! Nothing more frustrating that going round in circles especially with an OS you're not familiar with. I've just done this and the USB stick shows as a bootable volume in the Startup Disk panel in System Preferences so I assume it should be bootable. With luck and a following wind, you should see the Lion installer in your bootable image list. Plug it into the Mac you want to install Lion on, reboot it while holding down the Option key and wait for the boot menu to appear. It should then turn into a Lion USB stick and be bootable. Step 6) Wait an indeterminable amount of time for the DMG to get restored to the USB Stick. Tell it to restore from "Mac OS X Install ESD", then press the Restore button. Step 5) Find your newly formatted USB Stick volume in the Disk Utility, right click on it and press Restore. Format it with Mac OS Extended format and choose the GUID Partition Map scheme. Find your USB stick and click the Erase button. I'm on a Mac with High Sierra at the moment, earlier or later versions will look different. Step 4) Put a USB stick into your Mac and open Disk Utility. There's a DMG in there called InstallESD.dmg. Right click on that and click "Show Package Contents". Step 3) In the extracted contents, there's another PKG file called InstallMacOSX.pkg. Copy the PKG file somewhere, then use The Unarchiver to extract it. Step 1) On a handy Mac, grab Lion installer from Apple website here: It sounds like you've done this already, but here we go: in fact I lost count of the amount of ways it told me it couldn't do what I wanted. So, I downloaded a Lion.dmg file and researched what to do (after realising it won't USB boot), which is restore an image or something, which I try and get various error like 'cannot unmount disk', 'source busy', 'couldn't resize partition', then it asks to scan the image and tells me 'resource busy'. but apparently my Apple ID is too new or something and can only download later versions. Got into Disk Manager (sorry 'Utility') wiped the disk and tried to do a 'Reinstall Mac OS X' from an online thing. I thought I had a fairly good grip on what to do (only internet searches as I'm no Mac daddy for sure)! There are a few more things to try before I admit it beat me, but to save me time that I don't really have does anyone know how to get the Mac OS back onto a Macbook Pro (A1211 - 2006'ish). After spending a couple of hours on this yesterday afternoon, (although I have to admit I'm not sure it's worth the effort - long story short, I need a Mac to do some testing for another issue, so I dug out an old Macbook that's been sat in the cupboard for a few years). The devices can share their data via serial bus to improve their control on the system. The lift controller can manage the lift travel much better by having the actual speed and braking distance information supplied by the reverse. Once the two devices can communicate, they can share data, which increases their control over the motor and shaft. Otherwise, they cannot understand each other. Two devices must support the same protocol that is, speak the same language. When the communication channel is set up, the next problem is the protocol. While most controllers and drivers have serial ports, they do not all support the same standard. Vices with identical serial standards, such as CAN or RS485, and identical data structures. In theory, it seems very easy to share information in practice, however, it is not so easy. Any data can be transferred to the other device, provided that the other device can use or understand it. All of the information and commands between two devices are transmitted via the serial connection. In serial connection, only the serial communication terminals are connected between the controller and the motor driver (Figure 3). It needs neither a protocol nor communication channel setup. On the other hand, all controllers and motor drivers support parallel connection, the simplest way to connect a controller and motor driver. Only information that says the “speed is above or below a set value,” but not the value of the speed, can be sent. For example, the actual speed cannot be sent to the controller in numeric format by the reverse. Moreover, you cannot use a function unless it has been already implemented in both devices, and you cannot transfer numeric data in a parallel connection, since one terminal can carry only one-bit data. Furthermore, the output and input functions supplied by the controller and motor driver vary according to the brand or model of the device selected. Therefore, there is a physical limit to the channels that can be implemented between these two devices, and the device with the fewest terminals sets this limit. In parallel mode, each command or information requires one input in the first device, one output in the other device and wiring between them. In parallel mode, outputs of one device are connected to the inputs of the other device and vice-versa. This communication can be in parallel or in serial connection. There may be much more data flowing there, but these are the basic commands and information. The controller sends travel speed, direction and enable signal to the driver, and the driver sends the actual speed and device status to the controller. The simplest information flow between controller and driver is shown in Figure 2. Communication Between Controller and Motor Driver The motor driver generates voltage to rotate the motor at the desired speed. It only gets commands from the controller it gets speed and rotor position from the motor. The motor driver knows nothing about the shaft. The basic parts of the lift control system are shown in Figure 1.Īll of the shaft information, including car position, comes to the lift controller. The job of the motor driver is only to accomplish the motor rotation according to the commands of the controller. The motor driver behaves as a slave, and the lift controller acts as a manager. Any motion request is evaluated by the controller by sending appropriate commands to the motor driver. The lift controller board collects all of the information in the shaft and sends commands and manages the motor driver, as well as other units in the lift system. Other elements in a lift controller box are switching, wiring and limiting elements. Electric Lift ControllerĪ lift controller has two main units: the lift controller electronic board and the motor driver. In order to understand the transition to the integrated devices, we should first take a look at the communication of the lift controller and motor driver. In this article, we will try to explain the structures of the integrated lift controllers, as well as the changes introduced by them. At first glance, this new trend may appear to be a matter of only simplifying the lift controller wiring, but there is much more changed by the presence of the integrated lift controllers. For more information on November 2019’s event in Las Vegas and to participate, visit An integrated lift control system consists of a lift controller and a motor driver combined into one device. This article was first presented at the 2018 International Elevator & Escalator Symposium in Istanbul. Combining controller with motor driver in one unit offers much more than just simplicity. |
